Threat Level: Midnight

November 6th, 2008

I really hate to admit this to some people, but I have written several comedic “mystery” plays. The purpose behind each one was to raise money for a youth program Brent and I both work with. A couple hundred people would come, laugh, and empty their wallets for a non-profit I love. What a cool way to raise money for a non-profit, especially since I’m a sucker for silly humor. (Or as Brent would say, “delusional humor” where the main character(s) have no idea what’s really going on.)

When I was in high school I would write short sketches with a friend of mine that were always funny and ridiculous. I loved it! The kleptomaniac grandmother is one in particular that stands out in my mind. We had the whole class rolling on the floor.

So when I saw The Office episode where the office staff finds and reads Michael Scott’s action hero screenplay called Threat Level: Midnight, I could not help but laugh at myself. I wonder if my screenplays sound just a silly and stupid? Ha! Well, at least my screenplays have raised a little money. Wait… I think The Office has received a little bit more money than I have.

Anyway, I encourage you to watch a humorous tv show or movie today (make it the ‘delusional humor’). Laughing is great medicine. Here are a few suggestions off the top of my head. (This is in no way a completed list or a list of the “top” comedic movies/shows… just blabbing here!):
