I’m so behind…

November 9th, 2008

So, did you know that Merriam-Webster’s “Word of the Year” for 2007 was “w00t”? As you may know it’s an interjection “expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word ‘yay.’” Yep, you spell it with the double zeros. So hilarious. I know Brent’s been saying “woot” for the longest time on Twitter (I’m sure I’ve done it too), but who knew that it would win a word of the year contest? Was it rigged? Did someone Twitter a thousand of their friends to vote for “w00t”? Probably.

I’m always fascinated at how technology, blog culture, text messaging, etc. affects our lives. [Did you follow the presidential candidates on Twitter? I did.] I’m sure there were a million excellent conversations at PodCamp AZ about this very thing - the saturation of ’social’ media and online technology into our lives professionally and personally. But to be honest, I’m so turned off a lot of the time by the constant bombardment of new media. I believe it’s because I feel like I’m so darn busy, why would I want to adopt (or learn about) yet another piece of technology?

Brent is so the opposite of this. He thrives on digging into the latest and greatest (or not so great) online apps, iPhone apps, any sort of app. Back in the 90’s I used to call him a software genius because he could literally master the hardest software within a short period of time. (Adobe products, yo?!! Well, they’re hard for me.) Our garage is a jungle of cords, old cpu’s, monitors, etc. (We’ve moved in and out of several offices in the lifetime of our business… Currently it’s in our garage.) Yeah, I’ve got a lot of Craig’s listing to do. Bottom line: Technology has been thrust upon me. And it takes me a while to warm up to it.

Maybe that’s why PodCamp AZ’s whole focus was supposed to be about Relevant media. What’s relevant to you? What works for you? But I was so busy that weekend, that I really didn’t have too many meaningful conversations about it. Ha! That’s what the online community is for though, right? The conversation never ends.

Honestly I can see those of us who were born prior to 2000 will be viewed in the future as the ones who lived in the stone age. (You lived without a cell phone??) I can see historians research how well our generation adapted to the new culture of technology in the 90’s and beyond…. Some doing it very, very well. Some in this generation drive the direction of this technology, and are the very leaders of it. But others allow themselves to be steamrolled over by it as they fight against it or misunderstand it. And to some extent these rebellious bunch become “irrelevant” in many facets of business… or life. In reality, I totally am one who would have allowed myself to be steamrolled over. Funny how I married Brent. He constantly drags me into his crazy-amazing technology driven world. I love it.

I really think this whole 30-day challenge of blogging is working wonders for me. I just randomly saw a ”NaBloPoMo” ad on someone’s site (someone who had attended PodCamp AZ), and I was like, “What the heck, I’m gonna do it!” Now, every day I get a little bit more exited about what my next topic will be. Weird, but interesting.

So I might be way behind on the latest cool neato online thing. But I’m sure I’ll hear about it soon from Brent. He’s cool like that. And I’m sure I’ll hear about it from you too!

Good night.
