Max

We had to put down our dog Max last Saturday morning. I held his head in my hands as he fell asleep. His body was riddled with cancer, and he just didn’t want to eat anymore. He’s been in the family for 12 years. Brent bought him for me as a gift when we were dating. I can’t believe he is gone now!

Have you ever had to put down a dog or pet? This is my first time. I was actually pretty ok with the whole thing. We discovered last Thursday about his condition. I didn’t cry. We set the appointment for Saturday morning to put him down. Again, I felt really strong and certain about this decision. Friday past, and I was still ok. Everyone else seemed quite shook about. I didn’t know what was wrong with me to be honest! It wasn’t until I set foot in the vet’s office that I lost it. Wow, the experience was unreal.

I wrestled with guilt afterwords. And, well I just missed him.

I know this story isn’t new. People do this every day. But wow, this was a difficult experience.

When our little Brussels Pug was struggling like that, my mom had to take him down to the clinic for his euthanasia in the morning; I had to go to basketball practice because I was a brand new assistant coach, and my Dad was in England so he missed it too. It WAS hard for a while. Took almost a year for them to recruit a new addition: another Pug by the way.

Oh that must have been difficult. I know, we’ve been tossing around the idea of getting another dog.. but not just yet. Hope you’re doing well! You on facebook yet? :-)
