So I wanted to talk about a really cool non-profit organization in Mexico called Open Arms. I’ve had the opportunity to travel the world, working with various Christian organizations over the past 15+ years of my life, but this one certainly stands out to me. Their whole idea is to provide no-cost childcare to needy families. So many families cannot afford quality childcare, and either young children are left to run the streets while the parents work, or, in some desperate cases, the parents are forced to give their children up to the state – creating orphans out of these loved children. Open Arms keeps families together and children, safe, and they have created an awesome free day care center for kids to learn and grow.
The past few summers, my husband and I have been privileged to take a bunch of teenagers to help them. We’ve been able to help fix and build houses for families, and we’ve also been able to teach the kids English, etc, etc. The directors of Open Arms, Daniel and Heidi, are amazing. Growing up, Daniel was an orphan with his other sibilings in Mexico. He really has a passion for children to remain with their parents. His wife Heidi, an American, is the “heart and soul” (so to speak) of this ministry.
I find Open Arms a breath of fresh air when it comes to non-profit organizations. It actively attempts (and succeeds!) to prevent children from becoming orphans in a third world country. Additionally, the ladies that work the day care are from the town (La Mision) and Open Arms is able to pay them small wages.
If you ever have an opportunity to give money to a non-profit, I strongly suggest you consider Open Arms. (Donations are tax-deductible!! Oh & Brent hooked them up with Pay Pal a while back, so they take Pay Pal donations too…)
Have a great evening!
Thanks Michelle, that was so nice of you to write that about us. You are so sweet!
You’re welcome. I love Open Arms!!
