Why My Mom’s a Teacher

by Michelle on April 28, 2010

Both of my parents are teachers and have been for decades. My mother recently sent me an email describing what keeps her teaching in a Title 1 California public school. [click to continue…]

PRACTICE hospitality

by Michelle on April 12, 2010

Well, here’s a little known secret. I tend to freak out before I have guests over. I attempt to clean the house and remove clutter with a good ‘editing eye’ in the hours or day prior to someone coming over. It has been a source of anxiety for me in the past. And my husband Brent has thought I’ve been a bit of a crack up. I’m sure a lot of people are like me. However I think I’ve come to the conclusion that all the fussing and worrying isn’t so necessary. Launch fail

by Michelle on April 5, 2010

I don’t know why, but this balloon launch fail video gets me every time. I suppose because there have been so many times when I’ve attempted something pretty cool and have run into a ‘launch-fail’ of my own. Anyway, hope this makes your Monday enjoyable! -Michelle :-)

Waking Up

by Michelle on April 2, 2010

My two year old daughter loves to pretend she’s asleep and then suddenly sit up and gasp for air while her arms are up in the air. That’s her idea of waking up I guess. It’s a little unnerving when you first experience her pretend wake-up because it comes off as someone who is coming up for air after being under water a few seconds too long. She still wakes up through the night (2-3 times most nights) and visits us each time she wakes, always upset (we’re working on this still). Waking up in a dark room (with a wee bit of night light) isn’t the most pleasant way to wake up I suppose. We haven’t quite mastered the art of rolling over and going back to sleep just yet. OK, but then there is the wake-up from her afternoon nap. She emerges from her room, hair waving in every direction, and she makes two choices: (1) Who’s lap she’ll sit in to help her wake up – Mom or Dad – (the other is shunned for a good 10-20 minutes), and; (2) Whether she’ll be in a good mood or not. Even the slightest thing you say to her, like “Hi Cadie!,” could cause her lower lip to turn down. You have to walk a fine line of not being too loud and too much, and not completely ignoring her either. Waking up is hard to do.

Relevant is such a weirdy word

by Michelle on March 29, 2010

All in the name of relevancy so much has been done over the past 10 years. Populist politicians (heck even the slower than molasses ones) have picked up the Twitter game to get their messages out. Churches have attempted to break down some crusty old traditions in order to relate to their communities by incorporating new media into their outreach. Even schools are being pushed up against the wall to let in a little change as students began to speak a completely different language [click to continue…]
